YouTube has launched a new tool which uses artificial intelligence in something of a novel way. Called Reimagine, the tool can be used to take a single frame from a Short and expand it into a longer standalone video.

The company describes this as giving users a “new spin on remixing”, but does not really give much indication of who the new AI-powered tool is aimed at.

The idea of stretching a single frame into a short clip is something that has been done before, but historically it has been used to do things such as animating old photos, or bringing still images to life. Reimagine is powered by Google’s Veo AI generation model and it has been designed to be as simple to use as possible.

Announcing the launch Reimagine, YouTube says:

Today, we’re introducing “Reimagine,” a new tool that gives everyone the ability to transform a single frame from an existing YouTube Short into an entirely new 8-second clip. Powered by Veo, Reimagine puts a new spin on remixing.

With just a few taps, viewers can insert themselves or objects into any eligible Short using up to two references from their photo gallery. Then, using either Gemini-suggested or custom-generated text prompts, Reimagine creates a high-quality video with audio, turning ideas into realities in no time. Every Reimagined Short links directly back to the original work, ensuring creators receive credit while expanding their reach to new audiences.

Look for Reimagine under the Remix tool on eligible Shorts to get started.

A new Reimagine button will be seen on videos which can be used in this way, and once this has been selected, users will be guided step by step through the process of transforming a frame into a standalone video.

There are very few options to choose from, and it will be interesting to see how popular this new creative tool proves to be with users. If you get a chance to try it out for yourself, share your thoughts in the comments.
