Google has announced a new Game Trials feature which lets users try out paid-for games without having to make a purchase. The try-before-you-buy system is an attempt to encourage more users to indulge in gaming, and hopefully part with some cash on titles they like.

The announcement comes as part of a series of gaming-related news. Google uses the news to also share the fact that it is expanding its gaming library to give users more choice.

Writing about the wider selection of games, Google says: “While free-to-play favorites are a staple of our catalog, we know you crave variety. That’s why we’re actively expanding our library to include more paid games. Over the coming months, some of the most anticipated indie games are coming to Play, including Moonlight Peaks, Sledding Game and Low-Budget Repairs. You can dive into these worlds across both mobile and PC with Google Play Games, and your Gamer Profile syncs your progress across devices”.

It is then that the company quietly mentions the new game trials option as part of an announcement about making it easier to find game on Google Play:

With an exciting lineup of new titles coming to Google Play in 2026, we’re making it easier to find the game that’s right for you. If you like playing on PC, you can explore the new PC section in the Play Store Games tab — your dedicated home for games optimized to play on Windows PCs. Found something you love? Wishlist it, and we’ll alert you when the game is on sale.

To help you more easily decide if you want to buy a game, we’re introducing Game Trials, a risk-free way to jump into the full version of a paid title at no cost. If you like it, you can easily purchase the game and pick up right where you left off, with your progress carrying over. Game Trials are rolling out soon to select paid games on mobile, and will come to Google Play Games on PC in the future.

Many players enjoy gaming across mobile and PC, but often you have to buy a version of the game for each device. Today, we’re fixing that for you: “Buy once, play anywhere” pricing is rolling out today on select paid games, such as the Reigns series, OTTTD and Dungeon Clawler. With a single purchase on Play, you’ll receive both the mobile and PC versions of a game.

Google also uses this gaming announcement to highlight the game-related help options that are now available:

Beyond helping you find your next favorite game, we also want to help you master it. Players trust other players, so we’re making it easier for you to ask (and answer!) game-related questions. Community Posts is now available in English for dozens of popular games, with more languages and games coming soon. Now our two billion passionate gamers have a dedicated space to swap tips and tricks, all within Google Play.

It concludes by saying: “Sometimes you need help when you’re in the thick of an intense battle. Last year, we announced Play Games Sidekick, a helpful in-game overlay that curates relevant gaming information and gives you AI-generated Game Tips, so you can stay in the game. Starting today, you can use Sidekick with select paid games downloaded from Play”.
