Microsoft is working to give users of Windows 11 a way to enable hidden feature of the operating system without the need for third party utilities. At the moment, the likes of ViVeTool are frequently used by hardcore users to gain access to as-yet unreleased features; soon this could be a thing of the past.

In the code of preview builds of Windows, reference has been spotted to a “Feature Flags” page in the Settings app. This will – at some point in the future – become and official way to enable hidden features.

It will probably come as no surprise to learn that it was PhantomOfEarth who spotted the yet-to-be-release component of Windows 11. The news was shared on X – as it usually is – and this time around it was confirmed by a Microsoft developer.

Sharing the findings on X, PhantomOfEarth said in a post:

Microsoft is FINALLY adding a “Feature Flags” page to Windows Insider settings that will let you manually toggle new features on or off without needing to use vivetool or suffering through CFR! (Hidden bits in 26300.8155, not enabled yet)

In a follow-up post, the eagle-eyed user gave a little more context to the feature:

This is a successor of the “Experimental Features” page that never truly did make it out of internal builds whereas this actually got into an Insider build, velocity and all, so there’s reason to be optimistic.

Incredibly, this is not something that Microsoft has ignored – quite the opposite in fact. In a surprise interaction on X, Marcus Ash – head of design and research for Windows and devices at Microsoft – said:

👀 You all are fast. Excited to share more about WIP settings next week.

So while we can now say that this Feature Flags page in Settings is definitely going to happen, we don not yet know exactly when. The good news is that there should be more information coming through official channels in the coming days, and then hopefully the Windows 11 builds including this page will not be far behind.
