A new study finds Liechtenstein to be the world’s most connected country, ranking towards the top of the table in most major categories. The Internet Accessibility Index from MoneySuperMarket Broadband analyses key indicators, including fixed-line broadband speeds, the price and affordability of home internet packages, as well as the cost of mobile internet data to rank the world’s most connected countries.
Scores are assigned across a number of categories including internet speeds, the percentage of population with web access, cost and mobile coverage. These are combined to produce an overall score. Liechtenstein tops the list with a score of 95.87, followed by the UK with 94.22, Denmark on 93.19, and Australia with 92.58. The US comes fifth with 92.30.
Looking at average download speeds Monaco tops the list with 232.4 Mbps, then Liechtenstein on 146.3, Uruguay 139.6, Malta 118.9 and the US with 114.3. The UK comes 21st on 70.9 Mbps.
On affordability Singapore is top with access typically costing 0.57 percent of average monthly income, followed by Romania on 0.60 percent and Liechtenstein on 0.66 percent. Here the UK ranks 20th in broadband affordability, costing 0.94 percent of the median monthly income, while the US places 16th
The order is somewhat different when you look at the price of using 1GB of mobile data. Here Israel is cheapest on $0.08, followed by Italy on $0.22 and Kazakhstan at $0.50.

Our research highlights the stark differences in internet access around the world. In some countries, fast speeds and affordable pricing make getting online simple, while in others, limited infrastructure and high costs remain a barrier to opportunity.
Although the UK ranks second overall in our Index, the findings show that several European neighbors still lead on cost and affordability — which is why it’s so important to shop around and compare deals to find the best value.
