A new online tool from Broadband Speed Test is offering UK households and businesses a free way to check whether their internet connection matches what they’re paying for. The service measures real-world performance and compares it with national averages.

The platform focuses on four core metrics that define broadband quality in everyday use: download speed, upload speed, ping, and jitter.

Download and upload speeds affect how quickly users can stream video, transfer files, or join video calls. Ping and jitter influence responsiveness and stability, which is especially relevant for gaming, remote work, and live streaming.

The results are then benchmarked against UK-wide averages across major connection types, including ADSL, FTTC, Full Fibre, and 5G home broadband. This will allow users to see how their connection compares with similar services nationwide.

Broadband Speed Test says the tool was built for UK consumers at a time when network infrastructure is evolving. Full Fibre now reaches 78 percent of UK homes, yet many properties still rely on older copper-based connections.

According to Ofcom data cited by the company, the UK’s average download speed is about 69.4Mbps, and customers on legacy ADSL or older FTTC lines often receive considerably lower speeds.

The service runs directly in a web browser and delivers readings within seconds, with results presented in plain English so anyone can understand what they mean.

In addition to individual tests, the site includes live activity showing recent speed test results submitted by users across the country. It also publishes monthly ISP speed rankings based on aggregated user data. Those rankings compare major UK broadband providers using performance figures gathered through the platform rather than advertised package speeds.

The site also offers guidance for users whose measured speeds fall below advertised levels, directing them to compare alternative broadband packages via comparebroadbandpackages.co.uk.

Marc Ferguson, founder of Broadband Speed Test, said: “ISPs make big promises on the tin. Our broadband speed test gives UK consumers the facts — quickly, clearly, and for free. Whether you’re working from home, gaming, streaming 4K, or simply frustrated with slow speeds, the tool tells you exactly what your connection is doing and what it should be doing.”
