Bitmoji have been a key component of Snapchat for a number of years, giving users of the social platform a somewhat unique way to create an avatar representation of themselves. If you have enjoyed the fact that there has been a separate Bitmoji app, there is some bad news: it is going away.

Snapchat has announced that from the middle of the year the app will no longer be available. But what does this mean for the features that users have become so accustomed to?

The good news is that while the app itself is going away, the features of it will be moved into the main Snapchat app. It remains to be seen whether this means that everything will make its way across, or if anything will be lost in the transition.

Snapchat has not given a reason for the change, but it seems likely that it is a part of an effort to streamline operations and reduce the costs of maintenance and development.

In a support document entitled “What’s happening to the Bitmoji app?”, Snapchat advises users:

Starting on June 30, 2026, the Bitmoji app will no longer be available. We’ll be bringing more Bitmoji experiences into the Snapchat app, so make sure to download Snapchat to continue accessing Bitmoji stickers, fashion, and the keyboard.

The social media platform also says:

Will I still be able to share Bitmoji stickers?

You can continue sharing Bitmoji stickers through the Snapchat app. Depending on your device, you may be able to share Bitmoji stickers from your phone’s keyboard with the Snapchat keyboard extension, or in iOS Messages with the Snapchat iMessage extension.

How do I continue using my current Bitmoji without the app?

If you installed Snapchat from the Bitmoji app, choose ‘Link Existing Avatar’ during sign-up to connect the Bitmoji you already use. If you skipped linking, open Snapchat and follow the prompt on Camera to finish linking.

You can also continue using your Bitmoji on the web and in the Chrome extension.

Will Bitmoji remaining incredibly popular, Snapchat would have to have an extraordinarily strong reason to kill them off completely. But it remains to be seen just what sort of response there is to the switch away from a dedicated app. How well this is received is likely to depend on what, if any, functionality is lost as a result.
