YouTube captions when muted

When it comes to subtitles – or captions if you prefer – feelings can be mixed. YouTube has just added a new option that will appeal to some people, and will probably bemuse others.

There are some people who like to have subtitles on all of the time; others still who need to have them enabled at all times because of impaired hearing. There are some people who hate subtitles, and others for whom having them on or off is entirely situational. It is for those who fall into the final category that YouTube is rolling out a new feature.

Subtitles can come in handy when watching videos which have muddy audio, or when listening in a noisy environment. There are also those occasions when you are watching a video somewhere that it is not possible to increase the volume.

What YouTube’s latest feature does, however, kicks in when you mute the audio. It is a simple idea, but one that saves viewers from having to find the captions toggle if they suddenly have to mute sound.

YouTube says:

When the user unmutes their device, captions are turned off. This is not currently available for Shorts. The setting is turned on by default for all users. However, you can turn it off in the caption settings.
