Surfshark has launched HeyPolo, a new location-sharing app that focuses on user control and privacy rather than constant tracking. The app targets families and groups who want to stay connected but without relying on always-on monitoring, and with flexible sharing options.

Location-sharing apps have become common tools for families, friends, and travel coordination, but many rely on continuous tracking that some users find uncomfortable. HeyPolo approaches the idea differently by allowing people to decide exactly when their location is visible and who can see it.

Instead of defaulting to constant monitoring, the app lets users enable sharing only when it feels necessary.

Sharing settings are built around choice, with options that control both timing and visibility. Users can select how their location appears on the map, choosing between precise positioning, a wider area view, or full privacy mode.

You can set start and end times for location sharing, keeping sessions limited to specific situations, such as meeting friends or coordinating travel plans. Once the timer ends, location access stops automatically, removing the risk of visibility lingering on after a change of plan.

Location data is encrypted while in transit, and the company says it won’t sell or monetize user location information.

The app supports group-based sharing, making it possible to create connections between family members or friends without extra fees for additional people. A single subscription allows unlimited groups, which could be useful for households with a lot of children, extended families, or social groups.

Coordinating school pickups, checking that someone arrived safely, or sharing travel updates are examples of where HeyPolo’s temporary location access could make sense.

“As a father myself, I wanted to create an app that could help me ensure my family’s safety while respecting and protecting their data at the same time,” says Edvinas Sersniovas, CEO at HeyPolo. “People want safety, but they don’t want to sacrifice their autonomy or feel controlled by those they trust. We are changing the perception that location sharing must equal surveillance.”

HeyPolo can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store now. A 30-day free trial is available for new users, so they can have a play around with it before committing to the service. It’s priced from $3.99 a month.
