MOPIC has announced HoloGlass, a screen attachment that converts compatible iPhone displays into glasses-free 3D screens through an integrated lens and companion app. The product is available for recent iPhone models and is offered to business partners who want to provide 3D services to their customers.
HoloGlass attaches to the front of a smartphone like a screen protector and incorporates a 3D lens built on MOPIC’s own ultra-precise optical design technology. The hybrid structure reportedly keeps full resolution 2D image quality during normal use and switches to stereoscopic 3D when the app is in use.
This approach addresses concerns about 2D image degradation, which has affected some earlier glasses-free 3D solutions.
MOPIC HoloGlass support
HoloGlass works on the iPhone 14, 15, 16, and 17 series, and the companion app, called MOPIC naturally enough, handles all the content processing. It converts standard 2D content into 3D in real time, including photos and videos captured on the device. Streaming video from platforms such as YouTube can also be processed through the app for live 3D viewing.
MOPIC describes its Real time 3D Preview feature as a first. This displays the smartphone camera’s live feed in stereoscopic 3D as it’s being recorded, allowing users to see depth effects on the screen immediately.
The company says this setup allows 3D content to be created without specialized cameras or production equipment.
MOPIC began as a spin off from Samsung Electronics’ internal C Lab venture program in 2015. Since then, it has developed its own glasses-free 3D hardware and image processing algorithms in house.
Beyond the consumer facing attachment, the company supplies software development kits to telecommunications companies, OTT providers, and game developers. These SDKs include the real time conversion and 3D preview technologies used in HoloGlass.
The focus is on business to business partnerships rather than direct retail sales. HoloGlass will be supplied to partners, which can offer the technology via their own services and distribution channels.
A MOPIC representative said, “HoloGlass is the optimal solution enabling companies to introduce glasses-free 3D services at a reasonable cost,” and added, “We expect it to drive the popularization of 3D content across various industries, as it allows users to experience 3D technology at a cost comparable to protective glass.”
