The now ubiquitous dark mode option is not only something that can be loved or hated, it can be loved or hated circumstantially. If you are the sort of person who uses Windows 11 in dark mode most of the time but occasionally feels the need to disable it – or vice versa – Microsoft, you will know that this can be frustrating.

Thankfully Microsoft is working to make switching dark mode on and off much quicker and easier, so you will feel more inclined to enable it and disable it according to what you’re doing.

Spotted hidden away in Insider builds of the operating system, Microsoft is borrowing an idea already implemented in PowerToys and added it to Windows 11 in a slightly different form. It was – as is so often the case – PhantomOfEarth that shared news of the feature, posting on X:

It looks like the ability to remove unwanted quick actions from Windows 11’s quick settings menu is finally returning! Hidden in build 26300.7965 is an updated energy saver quick setting which supports this (removing it doesn’t work just yet, though). Hopefully more follow suit.

And:

The updated quick setting has also been turned into a split toggle with a currently blank subpage, energy recommendations will likely be displayed here in a later build.

And:

This subpage already works properly on devices with a battery, includes a bunch of toggles including one for dark mode. So hey, I guess we are getting a dark mode toggle in quick settings, not a dedicated top-level action though.

Linking dark mode to energy saving is something that may well see an increase in usage, perhaps notably at business or enterprise levels.

By making dark mode so accessible and so easy to disable when it is not needed or desired, Microsoft makes this mode far more flexible and, by extension, appealing to a broader range of people.

It is not yet clear how far from release this is, and Microsoft has not said anything about its plans. But the fact that this option has been spotted in preview builds suggests that work is well underway, and it should not be too long before more people can try it out.
