Monotype has launched AI Search, a conversational tool that changes how designers and brands discover fonts across its 250,000+ typefaces. Available on MyFonts in the US and UK, and on the Monotype Fonts platform in multiple languages, the feature lets users describe creative intent in natural language to find suitable typefaces faster.
The approach replaces traditional font filters and tag-based browsing with prompts based on mood, tone, and brand traits.
AI Search operates across Monotype’s full library, which includes work from more than 4,500 foundry partners. Instead of sorting through categories or scrolling through long lists, users can type phrases that reflect a project’s style or emotional direction.
The system translates those prompts into curated recommendations that reflect context and availability.
“Finding the right font shouldn’t feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. AI Search changes the creative workflow for the better,” said Mike Matteo, Chief Typography Officer at Monotype. “In traditional font search, designers are forced to adapt their creative vision to limited search filters, directories, and taxonomies. With AI Search, we’ve built a more intelligent system that understands how creatives think and speak — in moods, emotions, and intent. It’s a faster, more human way to move from conceptual idea to typographic expression and creative execution.”
AI Search integrates directly into Monotype Fonts and MyFonts. It delivers inventory-aware results and instant previews, allowing designers to evaluate options quickly. The tool also provides semantic explanations that describe why a font matches a prompt.
Selecting a typeface often takes up a noticeable portion of creative workflows. According to Monotype research, organizations reclaim up to 35 percent of creative time by streamlining these processes. The company also found that 62 percent of surveyed organizations using AI and automation reported boosts in efficiency and creativity.
Additional research from Monotype shows that 82 percent of creatives rank typography among their top three decision-making components. Around 85 percent consider choosing a distinctive font critical to shaping brand identity.

“Our AI Search is a powerful creative interpreter, leading the next era of search and discovery beyond tags, genres, and jargon.” said Terrance Weinzierl, Executive Creative Director at Monotype. “Being able to search by mood and emotion, following the flow state of your design instincts and concepts, will shorten and enhance the search process. It’s search that speaks your language, turning vague ideas into precise font choices.”
AI Search supports multiple languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese, and Monotype hopes the system will extend into creative applications, design tools, and digital workflows in due course.
